Bot Traffic
Bot traffic is visits, clicks and actions on a website or in ads performed by programs rather than real people. It distorts statistics and often wastes spend.
Bot traffic is any traffic generated by an automated script, a headless browser or an entire farm of devices. Bots imitate user behavior: they open pages, click banners, fill in forms, register and even enter data. In the industry they are divided into “good” bots (search crawlers, uptime monitoring, partner parsers) and “bad” bots (fake engagement, click fraud, conversion spoofing, scraping).
## How it works
A bot receives a link with tracker parameters, loads the landing page, runs the scripted scenario and sends events to the analytics system or to the partner program's postback. Sophisticated bots emulate mouse movements, delays between actions and page scrolling, and they spoof the browser fingerprint. To get past checks they use proxies, antidetect browsers and pools of mobile IPs, so simple User-Agent filters stop working.
## Where it appears in high-risk verticals
In gambling and betting, bots inflate registrations and deposits to earn a CPA payout for a “quality” player, or generate fake FTDs. In crypto and fintech, bots test registration scripts, mass-create accounts for airdrops and get around bonus limits. In dating, bots generate fake profiles and clicks on offers; in nutra, they inflate lead submissions on COD landing pages. In all these cases the bot disguises itself as a user from the target geo.
## Impact
Bot traffic corrupts metrics: impressions and clicks grow while CR, ROI and LTV fall. The advertiser pays for events that never happened, and web analytics shows abnormal spikes in time on site, page depth and traffic sources. Affiliate networks and payment providers may eventually lower payouts or block the account because of suspicious lead quality.
## How to detect it
Signs include unnaturally regular intervals between actions, zero time on page, identical screen resolutions and browser versions, a spike of visits from a single ASN, and mass registrations with similar emails. Behavioral analysis, fingerprint checks, retention cohort comparison, traffic quality scoring and comparison against a per-source baseline all help.

FAQ
How is bot traffic different from fraud?
Bot traffic is a source, meaning automated visits and actions. Fraud is a broader concept that includes fake engagement, conversion spoofing and partner abuse. Bots are often the tool used for fraud.
Can bot traffic be eliminated completely?
Usually not completely, but its share can be significantly reduced. Multi-layered checks, source quality control and comparison of metrics against baseline values all help.
How do you tell bot traffic from real users?
Look for anomalies: zero time on site, identical devices, spikes from a single provider, low retention and no follow-up actions after registration.
