Дружественный фрод
Friendly Fraud
Friendly fraud is when a genuine customer makes a purchase and then disputes it with the bank as fraudulent or not received in order to get the money back.
What is Дружественный фрод (Friendly Fraud)?
Friendly fraud (also called first-party fraud) differs from classic fraud in that the payment is made by the legitimate owner of the card or account. The problem arises at the dispute stage: the customer or someone close to them initiates a dispute, and the issuing bank returns the funds via chargeback. For the merchant, the result is the same as theft: the money is gone and the goods or services have already been delivered. ## How it works Typical scenarios: a customer doesn't recognize the merchant name on the statement and claims "not me", even though the transaction was made by them or a household member; a customer forgets to cancel a subscription and disputes the charge as unauthorized; a casino or betting player, after losing, claims they never made the deposit; a buyer of dietary supplements receives and accepts the product, then a month later demands a refund on the grounds of "did not order". Some of these cases are intentional, others stem from an unclear descriptor or poor support. ## Where it occurs Friendly fraud most often hits fintech services and payment intermediaries, online casinos and betting operators where deposits and withdrawals go through cards and e-wallets, and nutra offers with trial subscriptions and cash on delivery. Risk is high for products with auto-renewal and for merchants with a vague purchase description. ## Impact A rising chargeback ratio leads to fines from card schemes, higher reserve requirements and the risk of losing the merchant account. Banks and PSPs revise their terms, introduce a rolling reserve or reclassify the merchant as high-risk. Even isolated disputes distort campaign economics, since dispute fees are added on top of the refunded amount. ## Common mistakes It is wrong to treat every dispute as fraud and block the customer without review. Relying solely on refusing refunds is also a mistake: without evidence (login logs, IP addresses, proof of delivery, acceptance of terms, usage history), the bank almost always sides with the cardholder. A typical mistake of nutra projects and gambling operators is the lack of a clear descriptor and a transparent subscription cancellation mechanism. ## How to reduce risk The following help: a clear descriptor, explicit confirmation of the purchase and terms, reminders before a trial converts to a charge, a simple channel for contacting support, 3-D Secure where appropriate, and collecting evidence at every stage. Risk signals should be monitored via fraud scoring and integrations with dispute-prevention services.
A dietary supplement online store charges a trial payment, then automatically renews the subscription. A month later, the customer disputes one of the charges as unauthorized. If the merchant has proof of consent to the terms, a log of offer acceptance, IP data and delivery records, it can contest the chargeback with evidence. Without them, a refund is almost inevitable and the dispute rate grows.
