Линия
Betting Line
A betting line is a set of odds (prices) on a sporting event's outcomes, such as win, handicap, total and other markets, at which a bookmaker accepts bets.
What is Линия (Betting Line)?
The line is the current price of all available outcomes for a match or tournament. Each odd reflects an estimate of an outcome's probability, including the bookmaker's margin. The lower the odd, the more likely, in the trading department's view, the outcome is.
## How the line is formed
The opening line is usually set by traders based on statistics, team ratings, lineups, motivation and data from sports feeds. It is often built on internal models and also takes into account the lines of major markets, which serve as a benchmark for comparison.
## What it consists of
The line includes the main market (1X2 or match winner), Asian handicap, totals and special markets. The sum of the implied probabilities of all outcomes exceeds 100 percent, and this excess is the bookmaker's margin. It is what determines the line's profitability when bets come in evenly.
## How the line moves
The line changes under the influence of new information (injuries, substitutions, weather) and the volume and direction of bets. If a lot of money goes on one outcome, the trader lowers its odd to balance the risk. Pre-match and live lines follow different rules and update at different speeds.
## Common mistakes
Players compare odds without accounting for the margin and confuse a "low odd" with a "good value" bet. Another mistake is assuming the line is identical across all bookmakers, although differences between operators often arise from different models and betting flows.
FAQ
How is a line different from an odd?
An odd is the price of one specific outcome, while a line is the full set of such prices for an event across all markets. The term "line" usually refers to this collection of odds.
Why do lines differ between bookmakers?
Each company has its own model, its own margin and its own betting flow. As a result, the same event can have different odds.
What happens to the line during a match?
In-play, the line is updated almost continuously and reacts to on-field events. Odds may be temporarily suspended while a trader or automated system recalculates the risk.
