Liquidity

Liquidity is the ability of an asset or cash to be quickly exchanged or paid out without a significant change in price or losses on the transaction.

Liquidity describes how easily an asset can be bought or sold without moving its price. In crypto, it is about order book depth and trading volume. In fintech and payments, it is about having the funds to meet obligations on time: paying out merchants, processing refunds, and settling between banks and providers.

## How it works

On an exchange, liquidity is created by market makers and traders placing buy and sell orders. The denser the orders near the current price, the smaller the slippage (the difference between the expected and actual execution price). On DEXs, liquidity often sits in pools where the price is set by an automated market maker formula, so a large trade in a small pool noticeably moves the rate.

## In payments and fintech

Here the focus is on prefunding and working capital. A payment provider or acquirer must hold enough money in settlement accounts to pay merchants before funds arrive from issuing banks and payment schemes. A shortage of liquidity leads to payout delays and sometimes to suspension of service. A rolling reserve and a settlement schedule are often used for this.

## Where it appears

In crypto trading and staking, in stablecoin operations and OTC deals, in crypto processing settlements, and in player and partner payouts in gambling and arbitrage. For arbitrage teams, the liquidity of payment channels matters: if withdrawals through a specific method are blocked because the provider lacks funds, the offer loses its conversion into money.

## What it affects

Low liquidity increases volatility, the risk of position liquidation during sharp moves, and the cost of entering and exiting. In payments, it affects payout speed and partner reliability. High volume without liquidity can be misleading: some orders on the book may be fake.

FAQ

What is liquidity in simple terms?

It is how quickly and cheaply you can sell or buy an asset, or get money for settlement. The higher the liquidity, the fewer losses and delays on the transaction.

How is liquidity different from trading volume?

Volume shows how much has already passed through the market. Liquidity shows how much can be executed right now at the current price without a significant shift. Volume can be artificial, while liquidity is checked via the order book.

How can you tell that a provider has a liquidity shortage?

Signs include growing payout times, refusals of large withdrawals, frequent changes in terms, and delays in support responses. These signals should be checked before scaling traffic flows.
