Penetration Test

A pentest is an authorized simulated attack on a system, network, or application that helps find vulnerabilities before attackers can exploit them.

What is Пентест (Penetration Test)?

A pentest (penetration test) is a controlled attack carried out by a specialist on behalf of the system owner. The goal is to check whether unauthorized access to data, funds, or accounts is possible and by what routes. Unlike automated vulnerability scanning, a pentester manually links the weaknesses found into a chain and demonstrates the real damage.

## How it works

The work proceeds in stages: agreeing on the scope and rules of testing, reconnaissance, finding and verifying vulnerabilities, attempting exploitation, establishing persistence and escalating privileges, then a report with recommendations and a retest of the fixes. Testing covers the external perimeter, web and mobile applications, APIs, and the internal network. Social engineering is included only when the contract explicitly specifies it.

## Where it applies in high-risk verticals

In gambling and betting, a pentest examines game engines, player wallets, the betting and withdrawal systems, and operator admin panels. In crypto services, it covers key storage, exchange APIs, smart contracts, and bridges. In fintech and payments, testing is needed for compliance with the PCI DSS standard, and in dating, it protects personal data and private messages. The higher the cost of an error, the more important regular testing becomes.

## Impact and common mistakes

Pentest results directly affect resilience against fraud, data leaks, and payout hacking. Common mistakes include treating a one-off test as a guarantee of security, even though the attack surface changes with every release; replacing a pentest with a scanner; failing to define the scope, so testing goes beyond permitted boundaries; and receiving a report without a remediation plan or a retest.

Important: testing is allowed only with the system owner's written permission. Testing third-party resources without permission is illegal, even if the goal is to demonstrate a vulnerability.

FAQ

How does a pentest differ from a vulnerability scan?

A scanner automatically looks for known weaknesses based on a signature database and produces a list. A pentester manually checks whether the findings can be used to gain real access and combines the vulnerabilities into an attack chain.

Does a payment service need a pentest?

If the service processes card data, the PCI DSS standard requires regular penetration testing. The exact frequency and scope depend on the applicable standard and on agreements with partners.

How often should a pentest be conducted?

It is usually done before launching major changes and at regular intervals set by the company's security policy. A one-off test does not protect against vulnerabilities introduced in new releases.
