Rug Pull

Rug Pull

Rug pull is a scam in crypto and DeFi projects in which creators take investors' money by withdrawing liquidity or changing token terms, after which the token's price drops to zero.

What is Rug Pull?

## How it works

The project team creates a token and a liquidity pool on a decentralized exchange, for example paired with ETH or a stablecoin. Investors buy the token and its price rises. The creators then withdraw liquidity from the pool, and the token becomes almost impossible to sell or its price falls to zero. The money put into the pool goes to the organizers.

## Common schemes

Three variants are most common: liquidity withdrawal, where the contract owner takes the LP tokens or the pool is not locked; a hidden minting function that lets the owner create a huge supply of tokens and sell them; and a honeypot contract, where buying is allowed but selling is blocked for everyone except the owner. Hidden sell taxes that gradually wipe out sale proceeds are also sometimes used.

## Warning signs

Red flags include an anonymous team, no independent smart contract audit, unlocked liquidity, a token supply concentrated in a few wallets, no renouncement of owner privileges, and a sharp price rise on low trading volume. Checking the contract in a block explorer and analyzing the token distribution takes little time and reduces the risk.

## Where it occurs

Rug pulls most often happen with memecoins and new tokens launched on DEXs in a short period, as well as in projects with aggressive marketing through social networks and Telegram. Such schemes are described in reports from blockchain security analytics firms, but the exact share of such projects should be checked in specific sources rather than based on general estimates.

## What it means for high-risk verticals

For affiliates and media that promote crypto offers, rug pulls create reputational risks: traffic and partner links to a questionable project can lead to user complaints, suspension of ad accounts, and problems with payment partners. Before promoting a crypto project, it is worth verifying the team, the contract, and the liquidity history.

FAQ

How do you tell a rug pull apart from an ordinary token price drop?

In an ordinary drop, trading continues, the liquidity pool remains, and the team explains market movements. In a rug pull, liquidity is withdrawn or selling is blocked, and the team stops responding.

Can money be recovered after a rug pull?

Recovery is practically impossible, because blockchain transactions are irreversible. Sometimes funds can be traced, but this does not guarantee their return.

What should you check before buying a new token?

Check whether the liquidity is locked, whether the contract has been audited, whether the owner keeps minting rights, and how the token supply is distributed among wallets.
