Сид-фраза

Seed Phrase

Seed phrase is a sequence of 12–24 words from which a crypto wallet generates private keys and restores access to funds.

What is Сид-фраза (Seed Phrase)?

A seed phrase, or mnemonic phrase, is a set of words, usually 12, 18 or 24 words under the BIP-39 standard. The wallet derives its master (root) private key from it, and the keys for all of its addresses are derived from that master key.

## How it works

The words encode a random number (entropy) and a checksum. Under the BIP-32/BIP-44 hierarchy, the keys for all wallet addresses are derived from the master key. Anyone who knows the phrase therefore has full access to the funds, and compatible software lets you restore the wallet on another device.

## Where it is used

When you create a self-custody software or hardware wallet. Custodial exchange wallets usually do not issue a seed phrase: the platform holds the keys and bears responsibility for them.

## What it affects

Losing the phrase means losing the ability to restore access to the funds. If it is compromised, all funds and all future incoming deposits to the wallet's addresses can be stolen. An app password does not replace the phrase: it only unlocks the local storage on the device.

## Common mistakes

Storing the phrase in notes, messengers, cloud folders or as a screenshot. Entering the phrase on sites that ask for “verification” or “syncing” is a classic phishing scam. Keeping a single copy in one place without checking, during restoration, that the written words match the original.

FAQ

How is a seed phrase different from a private key?

A private key belongs to a single address, while a seed phrase gives access to all keys of the wallet at once. That is why it needs to be protected more strictly than an individual key.

Can a lost seed phrase be recovered?

No. Service support teams and exchanges cannot recover it. If the phrase is lost along with access to the device, the funds in a self-custody wallet are permanently inaccessible.

Do you need a seed phrase when using an exchange?

On an exchange with a custodial wallet, a seed phrase is usually not issued, because the platform holds the keys. A seed phrase is needed when you store cryptocurrency yourself.
