SPEI
SPEI
SPEI (Sistema de Pagos Electrónicos Interbancarios) is Mexico's interbank electronic transfer system, administered by Banco de México. Transfers are processed in real time.
What is SPEI?
SPEI is Mexico's national instant interbank transfer system, operated by the country's central bank (Banco de México). Participants are licensed banks and non-bank financial institutions. SPEI transfers are near-instant and available 24/7, which makes the system the main channel for domestic peso payments.
## How it works
Every account at a Mexican bank is identified by an 18-digit CLABE code. The payer enters the recipient's CLABE, the amount and the payment purpose, and the system executes the transfer between participating banks. To accept payments, an operator or PSP gets its own CLABE account and matches incoming funds to players by reference or payment purpose.
## Where it is used in high-risk verticals
In gambling and betting, SPEI is used for player deposits and withdrawals from Mexico. Operators usually don't work directly with banks but through a payment provider or aggregator that handles acceptance, reconciliation and payouts. As a result, the quality of the integration determines crediting speed and the share of disputed transactions.
## Common mistakes
Typical problems include an incorrectly entered CLABE, a mismatch between the account holder's name and the player's details, and a missing unique reference, which prevents the payment from being matched to the account. A separate risk is irreversibility: once confirmed, a transfer can only be returned through an explicit refund by the recipient, so errors in payment details and fraud schemes are costly.
## What it affects
Choosing SPEI affects deposit conversion (instant crediting reduces drop-offs), support workload (errors in payment details) and compliance risk: providers must verify customer identity and source of funds under AML/CFT rules. Without a clear KYC and payment monitoring scheme, the platform risks losing its acquiring access.
FAQ
What is a CLABE in SPEI?
CLABE is an 18-digit bank code that uniquely identifies the recipient's account in the SPEI system. Transfers are routed between banks based on this code.
Can a SPEI transfer be cancelled?
Usually not: an instant transfer is not reversed automatically once confirmed. A return is possible only at the recipient's initiative, which is why providers verify payment details and sender data in advance.
Why does SPEI matter for operators in Mexico?
It is one of the main national instant payment channels, and supporting it directly affects deposit conversion and the availability of payouts for local players.
