Verification of Payee

Verification of Payee

Verification of Payee (VoP) is a check that the recipient's name matches the account details before money is sent. It reduces payment errors and transfer fraud.

What is Verification of Payee?

Verification of Payee (VoP) is a mechanism in which the payer's bank or payment provider asks the recipient's bank to confirm, before a transfer is sent, that the account holder's name matches the name given in the payment. The result is usually reported as "match", "partial match" or "no match", and sometimes includes a suggested name from the recipient bank's records.

## How it works

The payer enters the payment details (IBAN or account number and the recipient's name). Before the operation is confirmed, the system sends a request to the recipient's bank, which checks the name against its client data and returns a status. If the names do not match, the sender sees a warning and can correct the details or cancel the transfer. The mechanism matters most for instant transfers, where funds leave within seconds and recalling them is difficult.

## Where it is used

In the UK the check is known as Confirmation of Payee. In the eurozone it is being rolled out as part of the requirements for instant payments. In fintech and payments, VoP matters for P2P transfers, partner payouts and player payouts, where the recipient is often entered manually.

## What it affects

VoP reduces the share of payments sent to the wrong recipient and makes social engineering harder, where a fraudster persuades a victim to send money to someone else's account. For merchants and PSPs, this means an extra step in the interface, possible declines when names do not match, and requirements for the quality of client data in the KYC profile.

## Common mistakes

Typical problems include a name entered in a different format (abbreviations, Latin and Cyrillic script, surname and first name in a different order), a company's trading name listed in the details instead of its legal name, and not checking that the name matches the registration documents. Another mistake is treating VoP as a guarantee: the check confirms that the name matches, but it does not confirm that the operation is lawful or that the funds are legitimate.

FAQ

Is Verification of Payee the same as Confirmation of Payee?

In essence, yes: these are similar mechanisms for checking the recipient's name, and they differ in name and in implementation rules across jurisdictions. The term Confirmation of Payee is more commonly used in the UK.

Does VoP check that a transfer is safe?

No. The mechanism only checks that the account holder's name matches the payment details. Risk assessment of the operation, source of funds and fraud are still handled separately, for example through anti-fraud and AML procedures.

What should I do if VoP reports a name mismatch?

Do not force the payment through. First verify the recipient's details against the contract or registration documents, correct the name to match the official records, and retry the operation. If the mismatch persists, confirm the recipient's details with them directly.
