Fraud Analyst
A Fraud Analyst identifies fraudulent activity by players, transactions, and accounts and reduces company losses from fraud and bonus abuse.
What a Fraud Analyst does
A Fraud Analyst finds and investigates fraud on the platform, including multi-accounting, bonus abuse, fake or stolen payment methods, player collusion, and withdrawal schemes. In high-risk verticals, fraud hits margins directly and damages relationships with payment providers. High chargeback and fraud rates lead to fines, tougher acquiring terms, and regulatory problems.
The role matters because anti-fraud rules don't work well on their own. The system generates alerts and scores, and the analyst examines the connections between accounts, devices, payments, and behavior. They separate real fraud from false positives and turn each review into a clear decision: block, restrict, request additional verification, or take no action. Analysts also produce the data that new rules are later built on.
Within the company, the Fraud Analyst usually sits in the risk management or compliance department and reports to the head of risk (Head of Risk or Fraud Manager). They typically do not manage people, but they work closely with data analysts, support, the payments team, AML specialists, and the verification team.
Responsibilities
- Review anti-fraud system alerts and cases: check accounts, deposit and withdrawal history, devices, IP addresses, and links to other accounts
- Identify multi-accounting, player collusion, bonus abuse, bet arbitrage, and other misuse under established procedures
- Make case decisions within your authority: block, restrict withdrawals, request documents, or close the case without action
- Check suspicious payments, including cards, P2P trades, crypto addresses, and unclear transactions, and coordinate with the payments team
- Escalate complex and systemic cases to your manager and related teams (AML, Legal, Support)
- Keep a case log and document decisions so they can be verified during internal audits or regulatory requests
- Respond to support and player inquiries about blocked or restricted accounts within the procedures
- Prepare descriptions of new fraud patterns and propose rule changes for the risk manager
- Take part in reviewing chargebacks and disputed payments, and gather evidence for providers
- Report on fraud losses and trends for the main types of fraud
Skills
- Analytical thinking: seeing connections between accounts, payments, and behavior rather than viewing each event in isolation
- Understanding of bonuses, bets, deposits, and withdrawals in betting, and of transfers, exchanges, and P2P in crypto
- Attention to detail and the ability to make quick decisions on routine cases
- Working with large volumes of data and samples, with basic SQL skills
- Written communication: short, structured case conclusions that lawyers and providers can understand
- Knowledge of basic KYC and AML principles and the ability to tell fraud apart from suspicious but legitimate activity
- Compliance with personal data confidentiality and access rules
- Resilience when handling a stream of alerts and urgent blocks
- Practical understanding of how payment systems and the chargeback process work
Tools
- SQL for querying transactions, accounts, and devices
- BI dashboards (Metabase, Looker, Tableau, or similar)
- Anti-fraud systems and scoring engines (internal or commercial)
- Ticketing and case management systems (Jira or similar)
- Excel and Google Sheets for summaries and quick checks
- Tools for analyzing links between accounts and devices (graph queries, internal services)
- Payment provider dashboards and chargeback management systems
- Python for ad hoc queries and data processing (as needed)
How performance is measured
- Share of fraud losses relative to turnover or GGR
- Accuracy of rules and decisions: rate of false positives and missed fraud
- Time to react to an alert and time to close a case
- Share of fraud detected before funds are withdrawn
- Number of cases processed in line with procedures and documentation quality
- Share of chargebacks and disputed payments won or reduced through strong evidence
By vertical
Betting
In betting, the main work involves bonus abuse, bet arbitrage (covering all outcomes), multi-accounting to obtain bonuses and withdrawals, player collusion, and suspicious payments made through cards and e-wallets. The role works closely with trading and the risk team, which monitors anomalies in lines and bets.
Crypto
In crypto, the focus shifts to fraud involving deposits and withdrawals: stolen cards, fraudulent P2P trades, money laundering through chains of addresses, and multi-accounting to get around limits. The analyst works closely with the AML team and uses on-chain data and blockchain analytics, not just internal logs.
Levels
Specialist
A Specialist reviews cases under established procedures, makes decisions on routine situations, and escalates complex or systemic cases. They do not write rules independently and are not responsible for the overall share of fraud, but they are responsible for the quality and completeness of each of their cases.
How to get there
People often move into Fraud Analyst roles from related positions such as player support or verification, payments and chargeback work, bank or payment monitoring, AML analytics, or data analytics. What matters most is experience with anomalies, documents, and risk decisions, more than the exact title of a past job.
Study in advance: how deposits, withdrawals, and bonuses work in your chosen vertical, the basic principles of KYC and AML, how chargebacks are structured, and the main types of fraud (payment data theft, multi-accounting, abuse, money laundering). It is useful to learn to write SQL queries for data pulls and to read simple dashboards, since without these, cases move slowly.
Growth comes from routine cases to complex ones: first, reviewing alerts under the procedures, then making independent decisions on groups of accounts, then taking part in rule tuning and investigating non-standard schemes. A clear sign of growth is being able to explain a decision so that a lawyer, a provider, or a regulator accepts it.

FAQ
How is a Fraud Analyst different from an AML Analyst?
A Fraud Analyst mainly fights fraud committed against the company and its players, such as payment data theft, bonus abuse, and multi-accounting. An AML Analyst focuses on money laundering and meeting financial monitoring requirements. In practice the roles overlap, especially in crypto, and they often work together.
Do I need programming experience to become a Fraud Analyst?
To get started, confident SQL and the ability to work with tables and dashboards are usually enough. Python programming helps speed up data pulls and analysis but is not mandatory at the specialist level. Analytical thinking and an understanding of product mechanics are usually more important.
What determines a Fraud Analyst's salary?
Pay depends on grade and level of responsibility, on the vertical and the company's scale, and on whether the specialist handles a high-volume stream of cases or large systemic schemes. Experience in crypto or betting, SQL skills, and the ability to run complex investigations also have an effect.
What are the working hours, and is there on-call duty?
In gambling and crypto, shifts or on-call duty are often required because the platform runs around the clock and urgent blocks and withdrawals cannot wait. Some companies run fraud teams on a schedule with weekend coverage. Conditions are usually described in the job posting.
What mistakes do newcomers most often make?
The most common mistakes are making decisions based on a single signal without analyzing connections, blocking a player without sufficient grounds or documentation, and failing to escalate complex cases. It is important to remember that a false block also has a cost: it hurts the customer and can create legal risks.
