Senior Data Scientist
A Senior Data Scientist in high-risk verticals builds forecasting, anti-fraud, and personalization models that directly affect margin and business risk.
What a Senior Data Scientist does
A Senior Data Scientist turns data on player, user, and payment behavior into models, decisions, and measurable economic impact. In high-risk verticals such as betting, dating, e-commerce, and fintech, a model error costs money: a wrong estimate of a bet or a fraudster shows up immediately in margin, chargebacks, and retention. That is why companies hire people in this role who can not only train models but also prove their value to the business.
Within the company, the role usually sits in the data function and reports to the Head of Data Science or Head of Data. At the senior level, the person often leads several workstreams on their own, sets experimentation methodology, and advises product, risk, and marketing teams. They may also manage one or two middle or junior specialists, and on projects they work with data engineers, analysts, developers, and product managers.
The key value of this role in high-risk verticals is the balance between accuracy and controllability. A model must be not only statistically strong but also explainable to the risk team and regulators, resilient to changes in user behavior, and suitable for real-time production deployment.
Responsibilities
- Translate business problems into data terms: what we predict, over what horizon, and how we measure model success
- Build and validate models for scoring, churn, LTV, anti-fraud, and suspicious transaction detection
- Design and analyze A/B tests and quasi-experimental estimates of effect, including control of false conclusions
- Develop features (feature engineering) together with data engineers and monitor their quality
- Deploy models to production and agree with ML engineers on requirements for latency, monitoring, and retraining
- Monitor data drift and model degradation, and trigger retraining or rollbacks
- Explain model results to risk, product, and marketing teams and support decisions based on them
- Carry out methodological work: experimentation standards, model documentation templates, and peer reviews
- Take part in assessing model risk for compliance and answer audit questions about decision logic
- Mentor middle and junior specialists and take responsibility for the quality of their work
Skills
- Statistics and probability theory: Bayesian approach, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing
- Machine learning: gradient boosting, logistic regression, time series, working with imbalanced classes
- Experiment design and causal inference
- SQL and work with large volumes of transactional data
- Python for analysis and modeling, and understanding of production code principles
- Model quality assessment: ROC AUC, PR AUC, calibration, stability over time
- Model explainability (SHAP and similar methods) and preparing materials for non-technical audiences
- Business thinking: understanding of unit economics, margin, risk, and regulatory constraints
- Communication and mentoring, and the ability to discuss uncertainty without panic
Tools
- Python (pandas, scikit-learn, LightGBM, XGBoost)
- SQL and data warehouses (ClickHouse, BigQuery, PostgreSQL)
- Jupyter and Git version control
- Experimentation and A/B testing platforms, both in-house and third-party
- MLOps systems and model registries (MLflow and similar)
- Visualization and BI tools (Tableau, Superset, Looker)
- Task trackers (Jira, Confluence for documentation)
How performance is measured
- Uplift in business metrics from deployed models (margin, conversion, reduction in fraud losses)
- Production model quality relative to the baseline and stability over time
- Share of experiments with correct methodology and valid conclusions
- Time from task setting to model launch in production
- Reduction in the false positive rate at a given level of missed risk
- Quality of documentation and passing internal and external model audits
By vertical
Betting
In betting, a Senior Data Scientist works with odds, margin, and player behavior: they model pricing and limits, detect arbitrage bettors and insider patterns, and assess the GGR effect of bonus mechanics. Work with event time series and fast response to changes in sports calendars are especially important here.
Dating
In dating, the main task is recommender systems and fighting fake and fraudulent profiles. Models assess match quality, fraud risk, and user retention, and experiments often involve network effects, where one user's behavior affects others.
E-Commerce
In e-commerce, the role covers recommendations, demand forecasting, buyer LTV estimation, and anti-fraud for payments. The specialist often works with seasonality and constraints on catalog updates, and results are measured through conversion and returns.
FinTech
In fintech and payments, a Senior Data Scientist is responsible for scoring, anti-fraud, KYC risk, and chargeback models. Requirements for explainability and auditability are higher than in most industries, and errors are directly tied to losses and regulatory consequences.
Levels
Senior
A senior takes a task independently from business framing through to production, is responsible for choosing the methodology and the quality of conclusions, influences the priorities of the function, and mentors junior colleagues. They are expected to anticipate the risks of a decision and to be willing to drop a model if its effect is not proven.
How to get there
People usually come to the profession from analytics, scientific fields (physics, mathematics, economics, statistics), or from roles such as Data Analyst and ML Engineer. Experience with real data and a proven result matter: models that actually moved metrics are valued more than academic projects.
To grow into a Senior role, it helps to progress step by step from junior to middle: first master SQL, Python, and basic statistics, then learn to design experiments and deploy models. It is also useful to understand the domain of your vertical: unit economics, regulatory constraints, and typical fraud schemes.
At the senior level, the key skill is not the number of algorithms you know but the ability to choose the right problem, explain its value, and take the solution to launch. Growth comes through ownership of a workstream, mentoring, and participation in decisions about priorities.

FAQ
How is a Senior Data Scientist different from a Data Analyst?
A Data Analyst mainly describes the past and supports decisions through reports and dashboards. A Senior Data Scientist builds predictive models and experiments that automatically or semi-automatically influence decisions in production. They are also responsible for methodology and the accuracy of conclusions.
Do you need experience in gambling or fintech to get this role?
Domain knowledge makes it much easier to start, but it is not always required. Companies more often look for the ability to quickly understand unit economics and risks. Experience in related areas, such as scoring, anti-fraud, or e-commerce, is also valued.
Which skills matter most for an interview?
Strong statistics, the ability to design A/B tests, SQL and Python skills, and the ability to explain results to a non-technical audience are important. Interviews often include case questions, such as how you would evaluate the effect of a new mechanic or how you would reduce false positives in anti-fraud.
What determines the income of a Senior Data Scientist in high-risk verticals?
Income depends on company size and data maturity, the vertical, and how much the models affect margin. Location, the depth of responsibility for a workstream, and the presence of management duties also matter. For exact figures, it is better to check current job postings and market surveys.
How should an employer describe a Senior Data Scientist vacancy?
Specify the vertical and concrete tasks: scoring, anti-fraud, recommendations, or pricing. List requirements for statistics, Python, SQL, and experience deploying models to production. Be sure to describe how the success of the role is measured and who it reports to.
