What a Senior Treasury Manager does

The Senior Treasury Manager makes sure the company always has the right amount of money in the right currency and in the right accounts. In fintech and payments this is critical: client funds, partner settlements and payouts to acquirers and providers move through a limited set of banks and payment accounts, and any cash gap quickly turns into failed payments or a breach of obligations to regulators and partners.

The role differs from accounting in that it looks forward. It is less about what has already happened and more about how much money each account will hold in a week, a month or a quarter, and what must be done to keep enough cash on hand. Companies in high-risk verticals often work with several partner banks, account freezes and reserve requirements, so the treasurer becomes the link between finance, risk and the payments business.

In the org chart, the Senior Treasury Manager usually reports to the Head of Treasury or the CFO and manages one to three junior treasurers or analysts. They work closely with payments leaders, the risk team, lawyers and the operations teams of partner banks.

  • Manage reserves for client payouts, including cases of bank delays and freezes
  • Arrange currency conversion and hedge currency risks within the approved policy
  • Agree limits for counterparties and partner banks together with the risk team
  • Maintain relationships with banks and payment partners: terms, limits, new accounts, disputed transactions

How performance is measured

  • No cash gaps that delay payouts to clients and partners
  • Accuracy of liquidity forecasts versus actual balances
  • Share of funds held within approved limits for banks and counterparties
  • Cost of currency conversion and currency risk management versus plan
  • Time needed to close reconciliations and prepare treasury reporting
  • Compliance with regulatory requirements on reserves and reporting with no findings

By vertical

FinTech

In fintech and payments, the treasurer works with settlements, reserves for client payouts and several partner banks at the same time. The main goal is to make sure client and partner funds are available on time and that liquidity does not depend on a single bank or a single provider.

Levels

Senior

The Senior level owns the overall liquidity strategy and bank relationships, makes decisions on limits and hedging, and defends the company's position to leadership and the regulator. The role works independently without step-by-step instructions and is accountable for the results of treasury as a whole, not just individual operations.

How to get there

People usually enter the profession from accounting and financial analysis, from banks (corporate banking, treasury, settlement operations), from audit or from payment companies. Experience with cash flows, forecasting and banks matters, even if it was gained in an adjacent role.

To prepare, it helps to learn the basics: how acquiring and payouts work, what settlement and reserves are, how currency operations work and what a cash plan is. In practice, learn to build a liquidity forecast in spreadsheets, read bank statements and reconcile payments, and understand reporting requirements for licensed companies.

Growth comes from taking on wider responsibility: from executing operations to managing the forecast, then to bank relationships and limits, and later to leading a team and setting liquidity strategy. The Senior Treasury Manager role is usually reached after independently running treasury across several currencies and accounts.

FAQ

How is a Senior Treasury Manager different from an accountant?

An accountant records what has already happened and is responsible for accurate bookkeeping. A treasurer looks ahead: forecasts balances, decides where and when to move money, and makes sure payments go through on time.

What background is needed for this role?

Usually it is experience in finance working with cash flows: treasury at a bank, financial analysis, audit, or treasury at a payment company. It is important to understand banking operations and be able to build a liquidity forecast.

Why is treasury more complex in fintech than in a typical business?

Client and partner money passes through several banks and providers, accounts can be frozen, and regulatory requirements for reserves and reporting are strict. As a result, the treasurer constantly balances fund availability, risk and compliance.

What determines a Senior Treasury Manager's income?

Income depends on the size and complexity of the company's treasury, the number of currencies and banks, the level of responsibility and the market in a given region. Experience managing a team and working with regulators also matters.

What mistakes are most common in this role?

The most common are overestimating the reliability of a single bank, underestimating seasonality in payments, and having no buffer for payout delays. Another frequent problem is a forecast that is not updated when payment volumes change.
