Halving

Halving is an event in the Bitcoin blockchain in which the reward miners receive for finding a block is cut in half. It happens roughly every 210,000 blocks, about every 4 years.

## How it works

The Bitcoin protocol is programmed to reduce issuance: every 210,000 blocks, the reward for a new block is halved. This happened in 2012, 2016, 2020 and 2024, when the block reward went from 50 to 25, 12.5, 6.25 and 3.125 BTC respectively. The total supply is capped at 21 million coins, and halvings make the issuance of new coins increasingly rare.

## What changes for miners

Miner revenue consists of the block reward and transaction fees. After a halving, the reward drops immediately, and without a rise in the price or fees, some miners may become unprofitable. This pushes some participants to leave the network, while the remaining ones move to more efficient hardware or cut their costs.

## Impact on the market and price

Historically, halvings have generated hype: traders priced in price growth due to the scarcity of new supply. But the link is not mechanical. Price depends on demand, macroeconomics, regulation and market sentiment, so growth after a halving is not guaranteed, and corrections happen in such periods as well.

## Common mistakes

A typical mistake is treating the halving as a guarantee of price growth based on the idea that "the last cycle will repeat." A second one is confusing it with supply limits on other networks: each project has its own issuance schedule, and a halving mechanism does not exist everywhere. A third is overlooking that after the block reward is reduced, the importance of transaction fees grows.

## Where the term is used

The term is used in crypto trading, mining analytics and token economics assessment. In high-risk verticals, for example in connection with crypto casinos or crypto processing, it should be explained to users, but not used as a basis for promising returns.

FAQ

How often does a halving happen in Bitcoin?

Roughly every 210,000 blocks, which corresponds to about 4 years. Exact dates depend on how quickly blocks are found, so they are estimated approximately.

Does the halving affect the price of Bitcoin?

It does not directly guarantee growth. Price is determined by demand, macroeconomics and regulation, and a reduction in supply is just one of the factors.

What happens when the block reward reaches zero?

Miners will earn income only from transaction fees. The protocol is designed for this transition, but its economic sustainability is debated in the industry.
