Mining

Mining is the process of confirming transactions and adding new blocks to a blockchain using a Proof of Work mechanism. The miner receives a reward for the computational work performed.

Mining is computational work on a network that confirms transactions and forms new blocks. In Proof of Work networks, such as Bitcoin, participants iterate hash function values until they find a suitable result. The miner who finds the block receives the block reward and the fees for the transactions included in it.

## How it works

Network difficulty adjusts automatically to the total hashrate, so the average interval between blocks stays consistent. The more power on the network, the higher the difficulty and the lower the chance that an individual miner will find a block on their own.

## Pools and hardware

Solo mining on home equipment almost never generates meaningful income, so miners join pools and share the reward in proportion to their contribution. Specialized ASIC devices for SHA-256 are far more efficient than graphics cards, and GPU mining of most major coins is generally unprofitable today.

## Economics and risks

Profitability depends on the coin's price, network difficulty, electricity costs, and the payback period of the equipment. Events such as halvings reduce the block reward, which changes the calculation dramatically. When the price falls, mining can become unprofitable even if the equipment is functioning properly.

## Cloud mining and fraud

High-risk verticals often feature "cloud mining" offers that promise stable income without owning any equipment. A significant share of these projects operate as Ponzi schemes, with payouts funded by new investors. Before working with such a product, verify that a real data center exists, check independent hashrate data, and confirm the legal entity behind it.

## Mining and Proof of Stake

FAQ

Can you earn from mining at home?

On modern Proof of Work networks, home equipment usually does not pay off because of competition from large farms. Income is possible mainly through a pool and only with low electricity costs and a favorable coin price.

How does mining differ from staking?

Mining requires computing resources and electricity, while staking requires locking up coins in a Proof of Stake network. Both mechanisms keep the blockchain running, but they work in different ways.

What is a halving?

A halving is an event in which the Bitcoin block reward is cut in half roughly every four years. It affects miners' profitability and is often linked to changes in the price.
