Рынок прогнозов

Prediction Market

A prediction market is a trading platform where participants buy and sell contracts on the outcome of a future event. The contract price reflects the estimated probability of that outcome.

What is Рынок прогнозов (Prediction Market)?

A prediction market is an exchange-style model in which the traded item is the outcome of a specific event: an election, a match, an asset price, or a product launch. Participants buy and sell 'yes' or 'no' contracts among themselves rather than betting against a bookmaker.

## How it works

A contract typically pays 1 unit if the outcome occurs and 0 if it does not. If 'yes' trades at 0.65, the market is pricing the probability of the event at roughly 65%. Profit can be locked in by selling a contract at a higher price than it was bought, not only by collecting the payout at resolution. Liquidity comes from market makers and from participants placing orders in the order book.

## Where it appears

In betting, these platforms compete with bookmaker odds and betting exchanges, which also trade prices but match bets against a counterparty. In the crypto space, markets are often built on stablecoins and smart contracts, with settlement in USDC or USDT. Regulation varies: some jurisdictions treat the platform as a derivatives exchange, others as gambling, and this determines whether a gambling license is required.

## What affects it

Order book depth determines how accurate the price is as a probability estimate and how much slippage you will face when entering a position. Trading and withdrawal fees eat into margins on thin markets. The rules for resolving disputed outcomes can matter more than the event itself: a contract's wording may differ from what everyone expected.

## Common mistakes

Traders confuse a contract price with a guaranteed probability. They do not read the market's resolution rules or the oracles that record the result. They underestimate low liquidity and trade on the last sale, which may not be repeatable. They overlook KYC and AML checks on withdrawals and the tax consequences in their own country.

Illustrative example: a contract on 'the candidate wins the election' trades at 0.40. A trader who estimates the chances at 55% buys at 0.40 and holds the position until the price rises. If the outcome occurs, the contract pays 1, and the difference between the purchase price and the payout forms the profit.

FAQ

How does a prediction market differ from a bookmaker?

In the bookmaker model, a bet is accepted against the bookmaker at a fixed odds price. On a prediction market, the trade takes place between participants and the price is set by supply and demand, so the position can be sold before the event occurs.

Is it legal?

It depends on the jurisdiction. Some regulators classify these platforms as derivatives, others as gambling. Before trading on a market, check the status of the specific platform in your country.

Why is a contract price treated as a probability?

If the payout is 1 and participants trade honestly, the price reflects the average probability estimate of all participants. However, on thin markets the price can significantly distort the real chances.
