Умная маршрутизация
Smart Routing
Smart Routing is the automatic selection of a payment route for each transaction, based on rules and real-time data: which provider or acquirer should process it.
What is Умная маршрутизация (Smart Routing)?
## How it works
The router receives a payment and, based on set rules or scoring, selects a provider. The rules take into account the card BIN, issuer country, currency, amount, transaction type, and decline history. If the first route returns a decline with a code that allows a retry, the transaction is sent to a backup route.
## What is optimized
Usually two metrics: approval rate and cost (PSP fees, acquirer MDR, interchange). They often conflict: the cheapest route may yield a lower conversion rate. That is why routing rules are tested on a sample of traffic rather than based on assumptions.
## Where it is used
In payment orchestration at fintech companies and merchants. In gambling and betting, it applies to deposits: the route switches between acquirers and payment methods depending on the player's country, bank limits, and decline history. Withdrawals usually follow the same logic, unless the rules and provider requirements specify otherwise.
## Common mistakes
Retrying a decline that should not be retried (a hard decline or a suspected fraud case) leads to more disputed transactions and problems with the provider. Choosing the cheapest route without considering its risk profile, for example a high chargeback rate. Running retries without a limit or delay, which creates unnecessary charge attempts.
## What it affects
Deposit conversion, payment acceptance cost, resilience when one provider fails, and the workload of the risk team. Without monitoring success rates for each route, smart routing turns into a set of random decisions.
FAQ
How is smart routing different from simple fallback?
Fallback switches a payment to a backup provider only after a decline. Smart routing selects the route in advance, based on rules, cost, and success-rate statistics by traffic segment.
Can smart routing be used without an orchestrator?
Technically yes, if the merchant has several direct connections and its own selection logic. However, ready-made orchestration platforms simplify rule management, monitoring, and provider switching.
Could a repeated charge cause problems with the bank?
It can. Retries after hard declines, or without considering response codes, increase the risk of disputed transactions. For this reason, you should only retry declines that card scheme rules allow to be retried, and limit the number of attempts.
