Motivation and career questions

These questions sound like small talk, but they decide whether a recruiter believes you will stay. Turnover is expensive in iGaming, payments and affiliate teams, so they listen for a reason to join that will still be true in twelve months.

“Why are you leaving your current job?”

What they really check: Whether you are running away from something or moving towards something — and whether you speak about a former employer in a way you might one day speak about them.

Builds trust

  • A concrete reason linked to growth: scope, product, market, skills you want to use.
  • Neutral, brief tone about the current employer.
  • Consistency with what is in your CV and LinkedIn.

Red flags

  • Blaming a manager or team in detail.
  • Money as the only reason.
  • Different stories for different questions.

Tip: Answer in two sentences: what you achieved there and what you can only do somewhere else. Then stop.

“Why this industry? Have you thought about the reputation of gambling (or crypto, nutra, dating)?”

What they really check: Whether you understand what the business really is and are comfortable with it — people who are uneasy about the vertical tend to leave or become a compliance risk.

Builds trust

  • Specific interest: regulation, payments complexity, product, data, pace.
  • Awareness of responsible gambling, KYC/AML or consumer protection.
  • No moralising and no bravado.

Red flags

  • “I just need a job.”
  • Jokes about grey schemes or getting round rules.
  • Visible discomfort with the vertical.

Tip: Name one thing that is genuinely hard about the industry and why that interests you.

“Where do you see yourself in three years?”

What they really check: Ambition calibrated to the role, and whether the company can offer that path.

Builds trust

  • Growth inside the function: deeper expertise or leading a small team.
  • Interest in learning the business around your role.
  • Realistic timeframes.

Red flags

  • “In your chair” said seriously.
  • A plan to start your own company soon.
  • No answer at all.

Tip: Tie your plan to the job: what you would need to learn here to get there.

“What do you know about us?”

What they really check: Preparation and genuine interest. In high-risk verticals it also shows whether you checked licences, markets and products before applying.

Builds trust

  • Markets, licences, products and recent news about the company.
  • A question that shows you looked deeper than the homepage.

Red flags

  • Only what is on the careers page.
  • Confusing the company with a competitor.

Tip: Spend twenty minutes on the company’s licences, brands, markets and latest news before the call.
