Head of Supply Chain
The Head of Supply Chain in a nutra project is responsible for sourcing, production, warehouse inventory and delivery of dietary supplements and health products so that sales do not stop.
What a Head of Supply Chain does
The Head of Supply Chain owns the full path of a product, from raw materials and contract manufacturing to the warehouse and courier or postal delivery to the customer. In nutra projects this role is critical: products are often sold through a model of rapid testing and scaling, and any supply failure means an empty warehouse, paused ads and lost money on traffic that has already been paid for. For this reason companies appoint a dedicated leader who keeps the chain under control rather than fixing it reactively when something breaks.
The role sits at the intersection of operations, finance and marketing. The Head of Supply Chain receives SKU and geo-level sales forecasts from marketing and the affiliate team, turns them into production and purchasing plans, and aligns volumes with contract manufacturers and logistics providers. They usually report to the COO or managing director and lead managers for procurement, logistics, warehouse, quality and sometimes demand planning.
In small teams the function may be combined with the COO or production manager role. In large companies it becomes a separate unit with its own budget and KPIs. In every case, this person is accountable for ensuring that the right product, with the right documents, reaches the right place on time and at an acceptable unit cost.
Responsibilities
- Build and maintain purchasing and production planning based on sales forecasts by SKU, geo and channel
- Manage contract manufacturers and raw material suppliers: selection, negotiations, terms and escalations when deadlines slip
- Control batch quality and certificates for raw materials and finished products together with the quality department
- Manage warehouse inventory: safety stock, turnover, write-offs, and replenishment by channel
- Coordinate logistics from production to the warehouse and on to the end customer, including the choice of 3PL and courier services
- Agree labeling, composition and packaging with legal and compliance teams so shipments are not blocked at borders or by carriers
- Set up processes for returns and disposal, including handling defective goods and products withdrawn from sale
- Build the supply chain budget and report unit cost to finance
- Prepare decisions on launching new SKUs and entering new countries in terms of timing, volumes and supply risks

- Negotiating with manufacturers and logistics providers, understanding delivery terms and chains of responsibility
- Inventory management and SKU-level turnover analysis
- Understanding unit cost: raw materials, packaging, production, delivery and losses from returns
- Working with documents: certificates, declarations, registration dossiers and their validity periods
- Leading a multi-functional team and building processes from scratch
- Analytics in spreadsheets and BI tools, reading inventory and sales reports
- Making decisions with incomplete data and under urgent launch deadlines
- Communicating with marketing and finance using the same language of numbers

Nutra
Supply chains in nutra are stricter than in most product niches: products must meet requirements for composition, labeling and documentation, and advertising channels can block or restrict sales after complaints or audits. The Head of Supply Chain must account for registration and certification timelines, keep a stock of documents for each SKU, and quickly shift traffic between offers and packaging versions when one of them comes under restrictions.
Levels
Head of / Director
At the Head of Supply Chain level, the person is accountable to the business owner for the results of the entire chain and its unit economics. They make decisions on changing manufacturers, large purchase volumes, launching new geographies and warehouse network strategy, approve the budget, and bear responsibility for shortages and frozen money. Team management, process building and strategic planning matter more than personal involvement in every operation.
How to get there
People usually enter this role from the bottom up: from purchasing, logistics, warehouse work, production planning, or the operations department of an e-commerce business selling physical goods. Experience with physical products, an understanding of the cycle from placing an order with a manufacturer to delivery to the end customer, and experience building processes under time pressure are important. For nutra, experience with regulated products or food or pharmaceutical manufacturing is useful, since those roles already involve working with documents and quality control.
To prepare, learn the basic concepts: demand planning, safety stock, inventory turnover, Incoterms, labeling and storage requirements for dietary supplements, and contract manufacturing. It helps to build a purchasing model in spreadsheets on your own, read inventory reports, and calculate unit cost including logistics and returns. A strong candidate can explain how they reduced out-of-stock situations or lowered frozen capital and show the results in numbers.
Growth usually happens by moving from execution to management: first a purchasing or logistics manager, then a head of a function with a team, and finally the head of the whole chain. The key step is to stop solving individual problems and start building a system that prevents them. In nutra this path often passes through several projects with different offers and geographies, which provides experience working with channel restrictions and documentation.

FAQ
How is a Head of Supply Chain different from a logistics manager?
A logistics manager is responsible for specific transportation and delivery, while the Head of Supply Chain is responsible for the entire chain from raw materials to the customer and its economics. They plan volumes, choose manufacturers and warehouses, manage inventory and make decisions about unit cost. Logistics is one part of their area of responsibility.
Do you need to know manufacturing to become a Head of Supply Chain in nutra?
Deep knowledge of production technology is not required, but you do need to understand how contract manufacturing works and what timing and risks it involves. You should be able to speak the language of technologists and quality teams, understand where tolerances are strict and where timelines can be negotiated. Experience in food or pharmaceutical manufacturing gives a clear advantage.
What determines income in this role?
Income depends on the size of the business and turnover, the complexity of the chain (number of SKUs, countries and manufacturers), the level of responsibility for unit cost, and whether there is a bonus tied to supply chain KPIs. Experience with regulated products and the ability to build processes in a fast-growing company also matter.
Which documents and knowledge are important for working with dietary supplements?
It is important to understand which documents each SKU requires: composition, quality certificates, declarations or registration dossiers under the rules of the country where the product is sold, and labeling rules. You need to track their expiry dates and prepare document packages for carriers and customs in advance. The exact list depends on the country and product category, so these requirements should be checked with legal and compliance teams.
How do employers describe a Head of Supply Chain job?
Job postings usually specify the scale of the chain (number of SKUs, volumes, geographies), experience managing purchasing and logistics, work with contract manufacturers, and understanding of regulated products. It helps to describe which channels and business models the company works with and which problems need to be solved in the first six to twelve months. Candidates look for a clear area of responsibility and authority over the budget.
