Junior ASO Assistant
The Junior ASO Assistant helps optimize app store listings on the App Store and Google Play. They collect keyword research, prepare copy and creatives, and run A/B tests under the supervision of an ASO specialist.
What a Junior ASO Assistant does
Junior ASO Assistant is an entry-level position on the App Store Optimization (ASO) team, responsible for an app's visibility and conversion in the App Store and Google Play. In high-risk verticals, and especially in dating, the store listing often determines whether an install happens at all. Stores tightly regulate wording, screenshots, and categories, so a mistake in metadata can lead to an update rejection or lower impressions.
The company needs this role to reduce the cost per install through organic traffic and to avoid depending entirely on paid channels. The Junior ASO Assistant takes on the routine work: collecting keyword queries, updating texts, exporting conversion data, and preparing icon and screenshot variants. Strategic decisions are made by the ASO manager or ASO lead.
The position usually reports to the ASO manager or the app marketing head and works closely with the UA team, product marketing, and designers. The assistant does not manage anyone but may run individual tests and reports across several locales.
Responsibilities
- Collect and update the keyword core for each app and locale: keywords, synonyms, and competitor queries
- Prepare and update metadata: title, subtitle, short and full descriptions, and Google Play keyword fields, respecting character limits
- Check copy and creatives against App Store and Google Play rules for dating apps before submitting for review
- Prepare icon, screenshot, and preview video variants together with the designer, and formulate test hypotheses
- Launch and run A/B tests of listings in Store Listing Experiments and related tools, and record the results
- Export weekly data on impressions, installs, and conversions by keyword and locale
- Track app rankings for target keywords and changes in store search results
- Monitor ratings and reviews, and pass recurring complaints to the product team and support
- Maintain a change log for listings and reports for the ASO manager
Skills
- Working with spreadsheets and basic analytics: filters, pivot tables, simple formulas
- Practical understanding of store ranking algorithms, without speculation about 'secret' factors
- Short-form copywriting that respects character limits and brand tone
- Basic understanding of A/B testing: one hypothesis at a time, sufficient sample size, and accurate result logging
- Documentation: hypotheses, test statuses, and change history
- Attention to store policies and regulatory restrictions for dating, and the habit of asking clarifying questions before publishing
- Communication with designers, the UA team, and product, and the ability to explain why a change is needed
- Localization awareness: understanding that search queries and wording differ across countries
- Self-organization and task prioritization when working on several apps
Tools
- App Store Connect
- Google Play Console
- Google Sheets and Excel
- Figma or another graphics editor for screenshots
- AppTweak, Sensor Tower, or similar ASO services for keyword and competitor data
- Jira or Trello for tasks and test statuses
- Google Analytics or internal BI dashboards for linking to conversions
How performance is measured
- Growth in organic installs for the app and for key locales
- Conversion rate from listing impression to install (CVR) based on test results
- Number of A/B tests launched and correctly completed over a period
- Share of core keywords in the keyword set that rank in the top 10 or top 20
- Number of listing changes rejected by stores due to errors in text or creatives
- Timeliness of report updates and completion of tracker tasks

Dating
In dating, the assistant works with the most strictly moderated categories: stores check screenshots, descriptions, and keywords for compliance with dating app rules. The Junior ASO Assistant must therefore verify every wording against current guidelines and maintain a list of prohibited and risky words for each locale.
Levels
Junior / Entry
Junior / Entry level focuses on execution: collecting keywords, preparing copy and creatives, running tests according to a ready plan, and preparing reports. Strategy, budgets, and priorities are decided by the ASO manager. The assistant escalates contentious issues and must check their own work before handing it over.
How to get there
People often move into ASO from adjacent roles: content marketing, SEO, copywriting, analytics, UA, or product marketing. Useful skills include working with spreadsheets, understanding the install funnel, and being comfortable writing within strict limits. A formal degree is usually not required; practical examples matter more.
To get started, study how the App Store and Google Play work: metadata fields and their limits, how keyword indexing works, the rules for dating categories, and common reasons for update rejections. It helps to build a small portfolio: an analysis of a competitor's listing, a proposed keyword set for one app, and test hypotheses with supporting reasoning.
Growth usually comes from independently running several tests, expanding into more locales, and taking on keyword research and reporting alone. Over time, the assistant earns the right to propose hypotheses and strategies, not just execute them.

FAQ
Who is a Junior ASO Assistant?
This is an entry-level specialist in app store listing optimization on the App Store and Google Play. They collect keywords, prepare copy and creatives, run A/B tests, and track results under the supervision of an ASO manager.
How is ASO different from SEO?
SEO works with search engines and websites, while ASO works with search and storefront discovery within app stores. Both use keywords and conversion, but in ASO the icon, screenshots, and ratings matter a lot, and the rules are set by the stores themselves.
Do I need to know programming or advanced analytics?
For a Junior position, confident spreadsheet skills, an understanding of basic metrics, and the ability to read reports are sufficient. Advanced analytics and SQL are more relevant at higher levels, but they are useful to learn for growth.
What are the specifics of ASO in dating?
Stores strictly limit wording, creatives, and categories for dating apps, so any listing change is checked for compliance with the rules. The assistant needs to know these restrictions and verify against them before publishing.
What determines income in this role?
Pay depends on region, company size, the number of apps in the portfolio, and how independently the specialist manages strategy. Moving into an ASO Specialist or Manager role usually comes with greater responsibility and higher income.
