Three ratios, three formulas

A chargeback ratio looks simple, but each party counts it differently. Acquirers usually divide this month’s chargebacks by this month’s transactions. Visa’s Acquirer Monitoring Program (VAMP) adds fraud reports (TC40) to disputes (TC15) and divides by settled transactions — one bad transaction can be counted twice. Mastercard’s Excessive Chargeback Program divides this month’s chargebacks by the previous month’s transactions, so a sudden drop in sales pushes the ratio up.

Thresholds to watch

  • Visa VAMP, merchant level: 1.5% “excessive” in most regions (2.2% in some), with at least 1,500 fraud reports and disputes in a month.
  • Mastercard: Excessive Chargeback Merchant at 1.5% and 100+ chargebacks; High Excessive at 3% and 300+.
  • Acquirers often act earlier, around 0.9–1%, with higher fees, a bigger rolling reserve or account closure.

FAQ

What is a good chargeback ratio?
Below 0.9% is generally safe with most acquirers. High-risk merchants usually aim for 0.5% or lower to keep fees and reserves down.
Do refunds count as chargebacks?
No. A refund issued before the customer disputes the payment is not a chargeback, which is why fast refunds are the cheapest way to protect the ratio.
Why does Visa count fraud reports too?
Since 2025 Visa’s VAMP combines fraud reports and disputes into one ratio, so fraud that never turns into a chargeback still counts against you.

Estimates for planning only, not financial or legal advice. Card-scheme thresholds as publicly described in November 2026; your acquirer’s contract and the schemes’ current rules prevail.
