Account Management Lead
Leads an account management team: owns the portfolio of key clients and partners, their retention, revenue growth and service quality in high-risk verticals.
What a Account Management Lead does
The Account Management Lead makes sure large and strategically important clients and partners get the service they need, stay with the company and generate growing revenue. In crypto and dating projects, the client base often consists of several dozen accounts, each contributing a significant share of turnover, and any failure in payments, moderation or traffic quickly becomes an escalation. That is why the role combines sales, client service and operational control.
Companies in high-risk verticals hire a Lead so they are not dependent on one manager's personal relationships with clients. The Lead sets team standards, distributes portfolios, oversees onboarding, reporting and incident review, and aligns with legal, compliance and finance on terms the client can accept without breaking internal rules or regulatory requirements.
In the structure, the role usually reports to the Head of Sales, the Head of Partnerships or the CEO of a smaller company. The Lead manages a group of account managers and works closely with product, the risk team and support. Unlike a regular account manager, the Lead is responsible not only for their own deals but also for the forecast for the portfolio as a whole.
Responsibilities
- Forms and distributes client portfolios among account managers based on the size, complexity and potential of each account.
- Personally manages strategic accounts: negotiations on renewals, expansion and terms of cooperation.
- Oversees client onboarding: document collection, integration setup, first launches and time to go-live.
- Organizes regular reviews with clients: reports on volumes, conversion, refunds and disputed transactions.
- Handles client escalations together with support, product and the risk team, and records the conclusions.
- Owns the portfolio revenue forecast and the weekly update of the sales pipeline in the CRM.
- Agrees non-standard terms (limits, rates, guarantees) with finance and compliance before promising them to a client.
- Conducts internal reviews of team performance: communication quality, completeness of CRM records, compliance with procedures.
- Trains and mentors account managers and helps build negotiation scripts and objection-handling approaches.
- Passes client feedback to the product and operations teams and drives the closure of key requests.
Skills
- Negotiating with decision-makers at client companies and making decisions under regulatory constraints
- Portfolio management and prioritizing accounts by revenue and churn risk
- Building CRM processes and ensuring the team follows them
- Understanding client unit economics: margin, LTV, acquisition cost, payout structure
- Handling objections and escalations without losing client trust
- Communicating across sales, product, risk and finance in a shared language
- Preparing forecasts and analytical reports for leadership
- Mentoring and evaluating staff, setting goals and giving feedback
- Basic risk knowledge: fraud, AML/KYC, chargebacks, payment provider blocks
- Time management and the ability to handle several large projects at once
Tools
- CRM (for example, HubSpot or Pipedrive)
- Google Sheets and Excel for portfolio models and forecasts
- Jira or Trello for onboarding tasks and escalations
- Metabase or BI dashboards for client reporting
- Slack or Telegram for day-to-day communication with the team and clients

How performance is measured
- Client retention across the portfolio and renewal rate

- Average time from new client onboarding to first launch
- Share of escalations closed without a repeat request
- NPS or satisfaction index for key clients
- Completeness and accuracy of deal data in the CRM for the team
By vertical
Crypto
In crypto projects, the Lead additionally coordinates work with payment providers, exchanges and OTC desks, owns clients' KYC/AML processes, and reacts quickly to account blocks and changes in regulatory requirements.
Dating
In dating, the Lead focuses on traffic and moderation quality, activity and monetization metrics, and compliance with app store and payment system rules, since blocks and complaints directly affect clients' revenue.
Levels
Management
At the management level, the Lead is responsible for the results of the entire account group: distributes workload, decides on disputed terms, defends the portfolio before leadership, and owns retention and the revenue forecast.
How to get there
Most often people move into the role from account manager, sales manager or partner manager positions, where they already handled several clients at once and worked with reporting. Experience in affiliate marketing, adtech or payments is a strong advantage, since in high-risk verticals it is important to understand how a client's money and risks work.
To prepare, learn the basics of unit economics in a client's business, master the CRM and simple forecasting models in spreadsheets, and study the fundamentals of AML/KYC and the reasons payment providers block accounts. It also helps to explain complex financial and operational questions in plain language, since the Lead constantly translates them between teams.
Growth usually comes through independently managing a large portfolio, then through mentoring junior colleagues and taking part in developing procedures. A sign of readiness is the ability to resolve disputed situations with clients on your own and to be accountable for the group's forecast, not just your own deals.

FAQ
How is an Account Management Lead different from a regular account manager?
A regular account manager is responsible for their own client deals and their results. The Lead additionally manages the team, distributes portfolios, oversees processes, and is responsible for the forecast and client retention across the whole group.
Do you need to know crypto or dating to take this role?
Deep knowledge of clients' products is useful but not always required. What matters more is understanding the monetization model, the main risks of the vertical, and the principles of KYC, AML and working with payment providers, which can be learned in practice.
What determines an Account Management Lead's income?
Income usually consists of a fixed base and bonuses tied to fulfilling the portfolio revenue plan, client retention and the quality of processes. Portfolio size, client complexity and the company's vertical also affect the terms.
Which skills matter most in an interview?
Interviewers usually assess negotiation skills, how you work through a complex client case, how you build a portfolio forecast and how you explain unit economics. You will often be asked about a time you saved a relationship with a difficult client.
What holds newcomers back from moving into a Lead role quickly?
The most common gaps are experience managing several clients at once, analytical skills and working with internal teams. The move becomes realistic when you take on mentoring, procedure development and responsibility for the group's results.
